Unlocking the value of good information management

Bramble.cc develops a value model for The National Archives
Bramble.cc is developing an information management value model (IMVM) for The National Archives’ Digital Continuity Project, which quantifies the significant cost savings and other benefits of good information management.
Supporting your business case
Time wasted by staff hunting for information and the unnecessary duplication of effort are just two ways in which poor information management can be costly to an organisation.
The IMVM has been developed as national best practice. Benefits can include everything from efficiencies and effectiveness to better customer service and risk reduction. The model works by quantifying the value of a proposed improvement in information management, rather than attempting to directly measure the value of the information itself.
How it works
The IMVM provides a monetary value against a number of factors and scenarios in six areas:
- direct cash savings
- efficiencies: improvements in productivity
- effectiveness: improvements in output
- risk reduction
- contribution to service sector or UK economy: the benefits to the customer
- asset value increase
We recommend running the IMVM against a number of scenarios, and comparing the monetary results with an estimate of the costs. This easily leads to an evidence-driven understanding of how changes in the way you manage information can increase efficiencies and effectiveness, and reduce costs.
Improvements in information management will directly drive an increase in the value of information itself, as follows:

Freely available
The National Archives and Bramble.cc are currently testing the model within the UK public sector, and once refined it will be made available for free to the public sector on the Digital Continuity pages of The National Archives’ website: www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/digitalcontinuity
Would you like to test the model?
Bramble.cc is currently seeking candidate organisations to help with further refinements and testing of the Information Management Value Model.
This will deliver a practical quantification of benefits for the chosen organisations, which can be incorporated into a holistic scoping and planning exercise to deliver a business case for practical improvements in their information management.
