Microsoft SharePoint
SharePoint is a software package from Microsoft for implementing systems to enable better information management. It includes technology tools for:
- electronic document & records management (EDRM)
- collaborative working
- electronic forms and workflow
- web content management
- portals
- enterprise search
- business intelligence
You can use it to build websites, intranets and extranets, and as the underlying system and repository for case management and enterprise content management (ECM).
The 2010 version, released in May 2010, is much improved, particularly for EDRM and for larger implementations. It is fast becoming the clear market leader, and almost de facto standard, for information management technologies.
SharePoint is feature rich, and breaks its information repository into many sites, which makes it a great enabler for effective electronic working in small teams. However, these plus points means that SharePoint requires even greater design and governance than other technologies – something that is all too easily missed in the drive to get on and implement.
Even with the best of intentions, it’s all too easy to end up with something that doesn’t add up to a single system, but instead is a tangled mess of incompatible instances of local preferences.
